Just another thought and am really interested in your thoughts on this: Can
it be that this arete-in-the-backseat gave rise to the development of, what
is now known as religion; that is: society's attempt at reaffirming its
norms as opposed to truth's objectivism? ( a development which took place
over a period of at least 250 years).

I do'nt know about the broad header of religeon but it DID influence
and help develop Christianity and Islam. From the Greek stoics
to the flouring of early Christianity in Alexandria. If you have
ever read the Nag Hammadi (Gnostic scriptures) it is peppered
with neoplatonism.
