Why assume it's "a metaphysical question that goes beyond the experience of events in 
process", when scientists give us a better answer to "why we are aware of ourselves"& why we "are totally dependent on something external to ourselves for our existence"(e.g., air, water, food), than metaphysicians do? Craig
