reason you could say his presence here is essential.

I do respect Ham's outright dissent, at least he admits his position rather
than trying to subvert Pirsig under the guise of supporting him. I don't know
how "essential" his presence is for me, but if you find dissent helps you hone
your philosophy, that's good enough.
