If you take a snapshot of a zebra, you have a spatial pattern of alternating 
black & white stripes.  If you see someone signal SOS with a flashlight, you see 
at a single space a temporal pattern of 3 long flashes, 3 short flashes & 3 long flashes.  
But Pirsig means something else by 'pattern'.   It's more like the duck-rabbit.

The imge can been seen as a rabbit pattern or a duck pattern.
