Actually, I don't think so.  They probably say "no religious affiliation" or something. How about in a survey where they want to determine belief in God? Would you say you are an "atheist"?

This guy Sam Harris makes a lot of good arguments that religious moderates create the context where religious extremism can thrive because political correctness keeps us from questioning people's beliefs which sometime results in suicide bombers and murder of abortion doctors.
