[MD] an intellectually guided society....

Hi Gav,
I have no problem with 7 out of the 8, and would aspire to all 8, as you would.
The problem with the 8th manifesto point is always what to do with
"freeloaders" ? People who like the benefits, the freedoms, but don't
take their individual responsibilities to the cosmos; don't keep their
side of the utopian bargain. If you can't exclude them from this
society - pragmatically they would just have to be "managed" somehow -
with "some" force in reserve to back that up.
If you have a practical alternative to this, I'd sure be keen to hear it.
Paradoxically it seems without 8 (enforcible law), 1 (sustainability)
must fail - utopia implodes. The fight for freedoms needs to be
legitimate.
Incidentally - the reality of "lore" as a basis for social morals is a
good one, but pragmatically some of that lore ends up being enacted
politically in law for exactly the reason above. (I read and reviewed
Al MacIntyre's "After Virtue" recently - has something to say on
this.)
