You have the makings here of what in mystical parlance is a "koan".  It's an 
opportunity to demonstrate intuitive logic for yourself

    Why is a universe better than no universe?

Meditate on that question, Platt.  Don't write anything down, and don't 
default to the "some things are better" rhetoric.  Just give it your 
undivided attention until you come up with an answer that makes sense to 
you.  It may change your whole perspective of reality.
