I was browsing the Ham / Joe thread thinking, where is this going ?
Saw someone pick up on the IV - V - I progression and thought, hang
on, we're playing the blues.
Yet still attracted to "harmonic" explanations, of things that arise
in complex adaptive systems - and the useful "rules of thumb" (of 7,
or 3, or 80/20, or octaves, or fractals, or Fibonnaci series) that
people extract from these patterns - like cicada reproductive cycles.
Of course seeing the repeated patterns / numbers as fundamental causal
"rules" is the deadly error. Harmony is the clue, not the cause.

Hi Ian and all,
I am trying to get my mind around: ³Harmony is the clue, not the cause.²
In some way to know anything is to know a pattern. IMO in Pirsig¹s view a
part of that pattern is a DQ perception of value. I can see value as
harmony, but the perception of value precedes harmony. In tying to get a
handle on that perception numbers are useful. 1 is unknown, 3 is unknown,
only the possibility of 3+3 is knowable theoretically. It is not until
3+3+3+3 can a harmony of spheres arise and a knowable pattern be
established, unless one of the spheres is seeing the harmony.
In Marsha¹s post about the terror of her two year old grandson to a maybe
automobile backfire, harmony or time becomes a factor and a buffer for her,
not her grandson.
