[Arlo had quoted Pirsig]
That's the best definition of you that's ever been invented. You may
think everything you say and everything you think is just you but
actually the language you use and the values you have are the result
of thousands of years of cultural evolution." (LILA)
[Platt]
Except as Pirsig points out, an individual, like the brujo, is the
sole catalyst of cultural change. "A tribe can change its values only
person by person and someone has to be first." (Lila, 9)
[Arlo]
Which is not in contrast to anything I've said, and when read
properly in the full context of ideas expressed in LILA only furthers
my point, that social participation is both agenic and structuring,
offers the affordance to follow DQ but at the price of constraining
responses.
Ron;
I think the story of the Brujo illustrates a quality response of the
Cultural immune system, instead of demanding the brujo fall in line
They made allowances for him to exercise his powers in new ways.
The Brujo did'nt seem very happy about it at first because it
Broke his power but the balance arrived at is the focus of the
Story. The Brujo was still allowed to hold power but it was
Directed as needed by the society. Symbosis.
This is what attracted Pirsig to Native ways.
