Did you have a particular analogy in mind? In which case, which one?

The difference comes from the fact that the MoQ is a metaphysics that tries to 
redefine what reality is made of using new building blocks. And since there's no 
word for these new building blocks, Pirsig had to use an existing word that 
resembled what he had in mind for the new building blocks as much as possible. 
He chose "pattern", which as you said about "thing", carries baggage. The 
baggage is mostly useful but can also be misleading, which is why I try to avoid 
using old definitions of MoQ terms.
