Why on earth would he do that [raise their pay] if he can keep all the 
profit to himself? All he needs to do is to pay enough for the worker to 
stay, and perhaps survive.  So the only reason that he would pay them more 
were if some other capitalist for some reason felt like paying more then he 
had to and were willing to employ.
