In 'The Heart of the Matter', Chip Baggett read a beautiful poem
which he was in the process of writing. It's been haunting me,
especially one particular sentence. To me it represents Lila, the
feminine. I find it really quite wonderful, so I decided to
transcribe it as best I could. I do not know how Mr. Baggett had it
laid out on the page, so I've written it as I heard it. He does
state on the tape that the poem is unnamed. I think of it as 'Beware
of Cage'. I may have made mistakes. I hope I will be forgiven.

unnamed poem
           by Chip Baggett

Though I've wings which span precise in inches,
feathers tucked and layered, finely hued.
Though I'm bird to you who need to name me,
the word is just a cage placed neatly on the sill.

Perched high above the shoreline, safely watching waves below,
Sitting in that window, you may think I'm there beside you.
Innocent, you hold me captive in the trace of definition.
Beware, the cage you find me in is also holding you.

Lest you miss the blink when image is unimagined.
Lest you pass me by and never know.
Meet me in flight, feel the cradled wind rocking under wing.
Watch the space expand beneath the cliff we pass
and spread across the quivering liquid blue.

Feel the blast of air.
Your stomach synced with mine,
Swooping down, down 'til sea salt sprays our nostrils.
Then stretch your soulful wing until its tip can brush the tip of mine,
as we're lifted high in currents spiraling upward.

And if by chance, or choice, we drift a while,
at last returning to that window,
and land upon the sill,
then, and then alone,
can you say you knew me.

Yet, even then,
a single glance across the sky
might catch a trace upon the wind
of something not defined,
something left behind.

The Universe is uncaused, like a net of jewels in which each is a
reflection of all the others in a fantastic, interrelated harmony without end.
