hiya,
i think we have never essentially stopped being 'serfs', in that our information has always been controlled. the witches were burnt, the indigenous were patronised instead of learned from, the media is a whore to power, a la manufacturing consent...schools stultify the spirit, replacing nurture and gentle guidance with the ubiquitous competition - ambition double team.
"greed and ambition, ambition and greed, keep you thick and dull but safe and clean" tim rogers
the internet circumvents these controls and is inexorably moving us towards genuine democracy, participative democracy. hence the fear of it from governments.
an aside, i don't understand why platt or anyone else (is there anyone else or just platt?) doesn't see that the two sides of politics, in the US or elsewhere, are essentially the same. they are both about maintaining an oligarchy of corporate interests, over and above the rights, desires, wishes, freedom of the populace.
solidarity is the key. divide and conquer has been the order of the day for many years now, we don't have to join in. the blame game is pointless: blame yourself: it ends and begins right there.
