Hi DMB,

Personally I think there is causation there, but clearly a complex
two-way "dependent arising" of patterns, kinda causation.

Interesting also that you use the word "comfort" as the thing that
people fear to leave behind, and get stressed when challenged to do
so, clearly that is a "conservative" tendency. Joining up those dots
further, I'm reminded of the (Welsh) word "cynefin".

It was the word used by Dave Snowden (now Cognitive Edge) to name his
ex-IBM consultancy specializing dealing with the reality of complexity
in management situations. Dave quotes Pirsig in his materials. The
word cynefin translates loosely to "comfort zone".

Regards
Ian

I heard about a parallel situation in a lecture on the psychology of religion yesterday. Apparently, religiosity correlates to a low tolerance for insecurity and uncertainty. It is not only a religious version of the same in political ideology, it explains why conservatives tend to be religious and vice versa. They're both part of a larger system of comforting ideas, comforting especially with respect to negative emotions such as fear, insecurity and uncertainty.

They tend to get angry when those comforting ideas are challenged or questioned. As you can imagine, this type would make a very unlikely philosopher.
