My point was that it depends on the understanding, the intent. I'm not looking to make a formal rebuttal but perhaps taking another look at the situation from another perspective. Philosophopologist was a term Pirsig used to connote a specific state of mind, an objective one. Cleverness may be called apon to engage a dialog of inquirey in regard to this state of absolute certainty. I was agreeing and pointing to the internal struggle we all share in this regard But I think you took it as a re-hashing of the social conflict you see Pirsig instigating.
Matt:
Ah. I have to admit, I didn't really understand your intent, given the short, staccato tracing of your thought you left on the page, which is why I was hoping for something a little more elongated. I apologize if I am neither used to nor entirely excited by aphorisms in a conversation by which I hope to, at least, raise my understanding of what other people think about things. I think people often assume the entirety of the stream going through their heads is easily conveyed, but I don't have that privileged, internal position in other people's heads, so I need the evidence of the page, so to speak.
I'm not sure I entirely understand the terms you are using to explicate the meaning of Pirsig's text, but I'll grant you that there will always be a struggle for creativity--well, at least for those who care.
Matt
