Hi John, don't shoot the messenger - I agree with you - just pointing
out that a lot of the justification for space investment is the escape
route argument.

I agree with matt (wilmott) too - the LHC and the other
fusion-focussed investments are scary. As the possibilities of
destructive power grow - the need for better decision-making grows
too. We can't settle all conflict and disagreement by war.

(Picking up on the "Oppenheimer" reference - I'd recommend "The
Physicists" - Die Physiker - by Friedrich Durrenmatt - I keep thinking
the time for a new public production in English is nigh.)
