This summer we visited my parents in Beirut for a couple of weeks. The
airplanes were jammed packed with families going 'home' to see the
relatives and friends in Beirut.

Beirut during the summer is absolute chaos. the traffic, humidity,
congestion, and heat would drive any one crazy. None of the visitors
would move back. Once vacation was over they would return to Paris,
London, New York, LA, Brussels and so on. But it's that human bond they
miss. A connection with the clan. Two to three weeks and they are ready
to return to normalcy. Where people stop at red lights, and stand in
line. Meanwhile, they recharge their batteries with that all too precious
human contact. Gossip, have food orgies, eat and be merry.

And it makes you wonder, do we lose something once we become orderly.
What is the difference in the human interaction between coming to a four
way stop light, a four way stop sign, a roundabout and an intersection
with no signs whatsoever?

We always here the expression that ' our town was so small, we only had
one stop light'. Is it really dangerous not having any more, or does make
you aware of where you are and makes you drive differently.

In smaller communities major problems don't come as a surprise. if farmer
john takes on to drinking instead of working his fields, his bankruptcy
would be expected. Smaller communities tend to have fewer 'money
changers'. goods and services are paid for directly, and not through
agencies and brokerage firms.
