Yes, that's the way with cats I think - they own you.
Incidentally, my wife had never had cats until we did - always lived
with dogs, working dogs as well as pets, so our cat started as a
dog-substitute (we called him "Rover"). Since we were both out at work
every day, an actual dog wasn't on.
Whole 'nother animal.
