Yesterday I was utterly happy. Aduh!   Why is it so difficult to 
catch a poem of happiness? Yesterday I drank from the waterfall of 
the morning, Yesterday I drank from the pitcher plant, kantor samar, 
round pocket.

Fresh heads were the best, the Dayak people said; now they make do 
with buffalo, hang horned skulls in the longhouse. Yesterday I traded 
my hat there for a longknife, mandau, with old bloodstains, dragon 
hilt, went hatless in the sun, utterly happy. Nyinte showed me the 
black orchid that is green; bleeding hearts and four o'clocks from my 
grandmothers' gardens grew wild in the clearings; the young bulls 
wore their genitals ...
