Can mel or anyone else give me a good reason to fear multiculturalism or
pluralism?

Thinking your are morally superior to others in every way makes you feel are
warm and sexy?
I agree with your and Ron's posts. Platt's "anti-multiculturalism" tirade is
misguided (at best) and poorly veiled supremacy (at worst). No one I know, not
even the most ardent "multiculturalists" would say that "democracy" is no
better than "tyranny". That's just absurd, and as I've said, really is the kind
of bunk that would give Limbaugh a chubby.
I've tried, even, to take Platt at his "premise", that cultural traits can be
judged and ranked and asked him (since I know ways he feels his culture is
morally superior) to list some ways OTHER cultures are morally superior.
Several times I have asked this, to the deafening sound of silence. Why? (I'm
sure you know). Because this is not about assessing cultural traits and
improving ourselves, its about Platt Proclaiming the Total and Absolute Moral
Supremacy of His Culture. Period. There are no ways the Lakota or Inuit or
Japanese or Cajun or "Black" (whatever that means) or Maori or Muslim or
fill-in-the-cultural-demarcation-of-your-choice are morally superior to
Platt's. None. Zippo. The best they can do is change to be like him.
I think it was Ron who mentioned "ethnic cleansing" and monoculturalism and I
think that's dead-on as the path Platt's gaze stares. Oh he won't say it, to be
sure, in fact he'll act all indignant and offended, but if you consider really
what he is saying, that is what it is. Some evidence? A while back when
discussing education (months and months ago) I made the comment about the
success of the Finnish and Japanese systems (as I have again recently), to
point out that its not "public" that's the problem (as he was claiming). His
response, those systems work because their societies are "monocultural".
I'm not even sure what "monocultural" means, exactly, since even up and down
Appalachia one finds distinguishable cultural traits from region to region. How
a rural Kentuky school is not "monocultural", I'll never know. But you see the
fear here? Its those damn inferior darkies and miscreants that are fucking up
Platt's Morally Superior world. (Some "postmodern" questions; is sexuality
"cultural"? (are gays part of a different "culture"?), is the culture of the
Mississippi River Delta the same as the culture of the Rockies in Western
Montana? Does a French Canadian share culture with French? Canada? Both?
Neither?)
Hitler was also very much opposed to "mutliculturalism". As was Slobodan
Milosevic. This is also a position held by the Mullahs. Great company, eh?
