[MD] Will the REAL age of the universe please stand up

Let's perform a little thought experiment... let's pretend that we're all
particles zipping along very close to the speed of light, coming out of our
big bang impetus and in communication with one another. We ask ourselves
then, "how long has it been since we started?"

Because of the relativistic effects of our speed in the universe, for us the
time is very short since the beginning. We'd say perhaps, the universe is a
hundred years old from our relative position.

A light particle, travelling a bit faster, would "perceive" the universe is
less than a second in age and man, travelling on a rock much, much more
slowly, would perceive about six billion years. It all depends on where
you are and how fast you go.

Everything is relative.

Science teaches us this fact about the universe. It even terms the whole
thing, the "space-time continuum" to describe the relation in nature between
time and space. But even tho that is what science believes, it is not what
science teaches. It's much easier to just take the human subjective
perspective and assume it as the basis of "true" reality. It's certainly
much easier to teach to fourth graders anyway.

And this shallow anthropocentricism is exactly what people on this forum
keep harping on as SOM. It's the metaphysical assumption of a subjective
mind, thinking about an objective reality, that is ridiculous when analyzed
and annoying when promulgated. And the promulgation doesn't show any signs
of slowing. As Marsha pointed out in a recent post, all you have to do is
take false teaching and cloak it with celebrity or authority and it gets
handed to the next generation of humans in the guise of educating the
masses.

James Carse says that what happened is that Science, when confronted
oppositionally by religion, BECAME a religion in response. And it's been a
mishmash ever since, with stupid titles to books like "A brief history of
time" compounding the common ignorance that time is something outside of
the cosmos that can be used to measure the age of time - Subjective
anthropocentrism run amok.

Why, if I had that stupid Hawking in front of me, I'd whack away at him just
like his wife does.

There are differing interpretations of Reality, some are just better than
others, that's all.
