That's well put ... "inability to conceive of democracy as a tradition"
Having made a great case for the "narrative" tradition - I already had
the feeling that MacIntyre was myopic on seeing the one true tradition
(in Cristianity) as somehow distinct from all the other "traditions" -
like democracy itself, or any system of moral governance. In fact I
think I tried to make that point. Thanks for reinforcing the fact that
MacIntyre doesn't improve on that - it will save me additional effort.
Though I can see (and I think it is Sam's Christian point); it has
always been an atheistic point of mine, that "free" democracies do
need some "relatively fixed" traditions within them to anchor a
working set of moral rules, and some "elders" with "traditional
authority" to maintain these.
Dangerous ground I know, but democratic governance comes in many
flavours, and anarchy is not necessarily the safest. As someone said
"Democracy is the worst form of governance, apart from all the
others.)
