[MD] Another parallel

Bo,

1) SOM is a metaphysics. You can't have a metaphysics shoehorned into a
metaphysics. I posted a suggestion that when you want to talk about S/O
thinking, you use a little "m" - to represent "manipulation". And yeah,
the S/O thinking or worldview or context is prevalent in academia and pretty
much everywhere. SO? It's not everything, it's just what it is.

2) Pirsig, according to his own story, didn't get so much get kicked out of
academia as he quit. He made one attempt once in a certain place and time
that was ill-prepared to receive his ideas. If he'd cared to jump through
some social hoops and make more of an effort, I'm sure he could have found
his own niche in them thar ivory towers of ivy leaguosity. If he'd really
wanted to. He chose different. I think he chose right. But he'd probably
be a lot more famous today if he'd let Bob (Redford) go ahead and portray
him in a movie and he chose different there too. NOT the same thing as
getting rejected by Hollywood, though, is it?

3) Royce pointed out that the only true Hegelians was Hegel and his
immediate followers. But I do think that Pirsig is closer to an Absolute
Idealist than a Radical Empiricists. And I do think that a prejudice
against the Absolute Value that Royce and Pirsig put forth existed in
academia and persists to this day, although its waning. I think that
prejudice is interesting and should be considered more carefully.

John

PS: I like the way you say, "I have in my possession a letter" - can I touch
it? Will I be healed?

There are differing interpretations of Reality, some are just better than
others, that's all.
