Deep down I don't mind what people call it;  but if we start getting hung up
on these labels I  can see it evolving to ridiculous extremes.

If you refer to me as a "husband" with a "wife" in a "marriage" then it is
unequal treatment to describe a loving same-sex couple as "partners".  And
since it would be an intrusion to define either of same sex partners in the
"wife/husband" nomenclature, the only way we can get equal treatment in
society is to demand that ALL couples define themselves only as "partners".

Why anything else would be just discriminatory and wrong, implying  one form
of  pair-bonding as normal and anything else as different or aberrant.
 Language creates thinking, after all.
