There have been taboos/restrictions on marriage since its inception. 
But also inter-racial marriage.

[Arlo]
I'm not saying there wasn't, but I do think the overall attitude was 
not as open as you seem to suggest. In any case, I won't argue it. 
But I'm still not sure that "inter-race" marriages being more 
accepted over the past thousand years is reason enough. The argument 
here is simply "tradition", and all by itself that doesn't hold a lot 
of water in my opinion.

Since I'm not against gay or mixed-race marriage the answer is easy.

[Arlo]
Good thing. But in modern American law it is not so easy. As 
conservative movements to define marriage, and deny gay unions, gain 
momentum, these types of situations will be very problematic, and I 
think they evidence the blindness with which many speak. That couple 
is a real couple that needs to know if the state is going to continue 
to recognize their marriage, and if it does, or if it does not, will 
open up a can of worms for those who want it "same sex marriages" banned.

Do you expect opposition to gay or mixed-race marriage to be rational.

[Arlo]
Quite frankly, no. I think even most of them are smart enough to know 
they can't justify their prejudice, and so they use lofty rhetoric or 
make appeals to "people marrying farm animals".
