In the book shogun, when Toranaga puts forth the proposition to Angin San
that there is NO excuse or extenuation  for rebellion, Anjin San calmly
states that  there is in fact one extenuating circumstance for rebellion -
when you win.
The former republics of the USSR,  collectively and with permission sought
to disband the union, it was not  treason, it was legal dissolution.

Treason was when the original 13 divorced from England.  You gonna get yer
panties in a twist over THAT one Dave?
