I had our welfare state in mind. What happens to the able bodied nonworkers
in the Netherlands?

Andre:
Didn't know the US of A had turned into a welfare state.

Able bodied non-workers in Holland can apply for UB. When they have satified
the aforementioned criteria (continuous employment over a period of years,
contributing to the UB insurance [compulsory] etc) they will get support. I
consider this a 'normal' way of a society looking after its workers who,
sometimes through no fault of their own are thrown outside the labour market
(especially in this current crisis).

I find it strange to hear that you have such an aversion against these types
of social supports.

Consider breaking a leg; should the person be reduced to a state of
starvation because he/she now cannot work and should therefore not be
entitled to financial support. (again this is catered for in the wages a
worker earns here and the taxes he/she pays...in this case a health
insurance, also compulsory).

I can think of many areas of criticism re Govt. interventions and
stipulations but these two mentioned above I consider a 'normal' right and
suggests , for me, a level at which a culture has civilised itself with
regards to its own members.
