dmb says:
Carl Jung, the analytical psychologist, said a few things about an already
existing symbol of wholeness and unity called a quaternity. He found
different versions of it in all kinds of places. Neoplatonism, the occult,
religion, alchemy. It's a kind of mandala, I guess. They can be as simple as
a circle divided in four by crossing lines or they can be quite elaborate.
It's basically a picture of symmetry, balance, unity of opposites - so
they're not too bad to look at. Maybe you can try to check out some images
on the web and see if any of them look like Royce's desire to you.

Sorry John, I had higher hopes...
What is you have been up to this term Dave? First you give us this a week or
so ago:
Apparently, the lotus flower has been used as a symbol of wholeness because
of its mandala-like appearance, when seen at a certain angle anyway. (It
occurs to me now that the rose also looks like a series of concentric
circles when viewed from above and so can be see as a mandala too.)
OMG, the creator sees that mandalas are Jungian archetypes and invents
flowers that look like them.
WTF, dude?
