[MD] suspended in language

Hi Ian,
I'm busy for the next few days because of a local election, but I want to
stress what I wrote to Matt: My thinking is that by understanding we are all
in the same relativistic(epistemologically and ontologically) boat, can only
bring about feelings of compassion.

Hi Matt, Marsha,
Been sidetracked by the Bo logic of late, but I think we have some
paths crossing here.
The problem with the total relativism, suspension in language, view is
that it does indeed end up being relative to the individual in
isolation.
I keep suggesting two angles we need to pin down to sort of the social
/ intellectual confusion, namely freedom vs authority and individual
vs collective. I don't believe that the individual / freedom extreme
(maximum DQ in isolation, full stop) can be the optimum position (and
that Pirsig ever intended that).
Regards
Ian

endorsement of a slogan like "we are suspended in language" (one that enters
fully into a tradition that includes the Romantics, Emerson, Nietzsche,
Heidegger, Derrida, Quine, Sellars, and most notoriously in America in the
last 50 years, Rorty), is that you prefer to be alone in your philosophy.
Often times in the discussion group of late, it has seemed to me that
people who'd otherwise be your friends, you'd rather not.
