Hi Arlo,
I don't see how by using a different word you are changing
anything. I agree that emerged is a better word, but it is
no more precise than the word bestowed. I am by
no means a theist, in that I do not believe in a god who
is just a super human brain that thinks like we do.
If the universe emerged as a response to Quality you
are giving Quality properties of enticing emergence.
This can either be as a direct creation, or the creation of
conditions that allowed emergence. Either way, you
provide Quality with properties of creation.
The universe did not emerge in response to Quality, the
universe emerged with Quality (imo). In this way one
does not give Quality God-like powers. This is similar
to the notion of emergence of everything from Tao. The
only difference is that we believe that we understand the
direction that is emergence with Quality is going.
Cheers
Mark

What created the universe? If you say chance, then you are just
replacing God with another word, in that case you should at least
capitalize it as in Chance.

This is a fallacy pushed by theists, I know. Sort of like how
"science is just another religion". By your same token, Quality is
also just another God. This is an argument that crops up again and
again by theists or Christian apologists in the forum unable or
unwilling to accept Pirsig's "anti-theistic" metaphysics.
Despite Platt's willful ignorance on the topic of emergence, the MOQ
proposes an emergentist explanation to how things came to be, not a
creative one. Nothing "created" the Universe, the Universe "emerged"
as a response to Quality. Nothing "created" carbon atoms, what we
call "carbon atoms" are patterns that emerged from subatomic
particles responding to Quality, to their free (albeit very limited)
response to DQ.
