   a rhetorical handbook on creating a character?   I need one of those.

hey! don't steal it.  This is my character, go get your own.

The past master at this, especially in the law courts, was neal cassady, who
famously got about 20 tickets wiped off his record by the virtue of creating
a sympathetic and entertaining character for the judge.

a good story can get you all kinds of goodies.
