[MD] suspended in language

Matt,

I have heard this before. The closest I ever came to a reasonable
explanation of my behavior was that of being a Myers-Brigg INTP, very heavy
on the introvert and thinking side of the scales. To live in the world of
ideas does not make you warm and fuzzy. I really do love all of you, I love
people, and do relatively well when I'm with them, but I prefer to be alone,
or at least three is often considered a crowd. I certainly do not mean to
reject kindness, but I know I do. A friend asked me to help at a Coffee
House event this weekend. I've committed, but I'm fretting about it.

I have this thing I'm after, been after it as long as I can remember.

Geez, I really love you all.

Marsha

One of the rhetorical bonuses of relativism is that it radically endorses
the desire to go it alone.

One of my growing suspicions about you, Marsha, punched up by your
endorsement of a slogan like "we are suspended in language" (one that enters
fully into a tradition that includes the Romantics, Emerson, Nietzsche,
Heidegger, Derrida, Quine, Sellars, and most notoriously in America in the
last 50 years, Rorty), is that you prefer to be alone in your philosophy.
Often times in the discussion group of late, it has seemed to me that people
who'd otherwise be your friends, you'd rather not.

Relativism can be a lonely place, and not just because Plato made Protagoras
out to be a bad guy.
