Well Marsha, purpose meaning and exactness of definition? Whew! Tall
order. Not too demanding are you...

With proper references too.

Meaning is derived from context. Steve Winwood's song has a peculiar
context for me, I bought that album, his first solo album, because I read a
review of him in rolling stone magazine and thought the way they described,
he sounded great. I played and played that album, but never heard anybody
else playing it or any of the songs on the radio, and it was a great album!
Later, Steve Winwood got real popular, but still I never hear any songs
from that first (solo) album of his.

At the end of the song, they chant:

Take me where the air is clean

To the country, fresh and green

I just cannot stand this pace

Sorry, but there's no such place

Which really resonated with me when I was living in Sacramento, working as a
pizza delivery guy in the evening and a piece-work framer in the morning.

"I just cannot stand this pace, sorry but there's no such place." - had an
influence on my thinking, I'm sure. It expressed the way I felt, but also
provided a certain way of thinking about how I felt - sorry, but there's no
such place. I liked that. I still do. Never underestimate the power of
denial to create reality. The Sweetland Bypass Effect, in song.

So last Wed. was my daughter's 20th birthday, away at college, I couldn't
afford to send her a present, so I sent her a song I remembered from my
past. I looked up the words, and posted them to MD because I liked them so
much.

And for some reason, when another favorite line from the song popped into my
head - Woman can you hear me? I hope you understand, before you go to bed
each night, take care of your man. - I thought, "Heh-heh, I bet Marsha will
really appreciate that. The whole subservient female thing gets her
going."

So... now my purposes, my meaning and my exact definition are laid bare and
laid at your feet. Mock me, deride me, praise me and ignore me - do what
you do. It all works for me and I like it.

So there.

With references.

John
