You are not far off, remember that Christianity traveled west, became
romanized, then it went back to the middle east. 

Islam tried to do the same thing, no pomp and circumstance, no 'church',
you and a direct line to God. Things like that usually don't go too well
with authority figures: Letting people discover the truth on their own.
