When DMB says he thinks Harris is wanting to get us beyond
the cultural relativism, clearly he is ... but it is by
recognizing the cultural basis of the acceptance of "facts"
that we do so.
Matt:
This what I don't know about Harris because I don't know
enough about him--whereas I don't know what "cultural
relativism" is supposed to be (I still take it to be a
shibboleth), I do understand Harris to be wanting to move
past the conversation-stopper of "you can't tell me what
to do because morals derive from the inside": classic
interpretation of the is/ought conundrum. However, I'm not
sure Harris does recognize the "cultural basis of the
acceptance of 'facts.'" I'm not sure he's Wittgensteinian or
Kuhnian in that sense.
I think it's the stance he ought to take, but from the little
I've read it's unclear to me whether that is the stance he
wants.
