Adrie,

I had heard that the proof, at Fermilab, for the top quark came from six
of six million trials. I also heard that the existence of the Higgs boson
was hypothesized because of the appearance of unwanted zeros in
certain calculations.. It is not comforting be at the mercy of such
hearsay, but at the same time I can sense the excitement.

While I like the excitement, I am very skeptical (rightfully) because I've
also been exposed to lectures, interviews and articles on the
'science wars' of the 1990's. Add to this how horrifying it is to hear
that the calculation for top spin is not just mathematics but something
"real". Real? In what sense real?

Looking at the bubbles in my half-filled teacup. It seems like a tiny
cauldron of chaotic ideas. It might not be so farfetched to predict that
there are some big changes coming, a new world-view even.

Marsha,
     the knower of nothing.
