Platt and Magnus,

This idea of beauty as quality intrigues me.  Platt's right, mere appearance
can't be the sole criteria of the good, but I'm reminded of something my old
friend Steve M. used to talk about a lot - how as an engineer, (he worked on
fighter jets) he was often amazed how a design based solely upon numbers and
calculations would have visual appeal when it was good.  Almost like there's
some kind of innate sense to Quality.

But that only works with a sincere effort at Quality.  Marketing for the
masses, and imitative Quality generated by selfishly-guided intellect, can
fool you.

Sophistry, I think it's called.
