Esoteric literature, which I am more familiar with than William James,
describes evolution in seven levels, using the musical scale of seven notes
as a template.  This becomes interesting, especially at the half-note MI-FA,
TI-DO intervals, which require a shock to continue.
 
DO Inorganic, RE Organic 1 (reproduction one-celled life by splitting of the
cell), MI Organic 2 (reproduction by the penetration of the egg-cell wall by
the sperm-cell).  The next note is a Half Tone interval requiring a shock of
DQ sciousness for further evolution to FA Emotions (DQ sciousness only), SOL
Intellect (DQ/SQ) consciousness, LA higher emotions (DQ sciousness only), TI
Higher intellect (DQ sciousness only).
 
Evolution of sciousness stops since there is no new shock of creative
sciousness like consciousmess enabling the crossing of the TI-DO half note
interval to start a new octave of evolutionary reality.
