Huh? What is digital about that? They didn't have any A/D converters 
for one thing. Or did I miss a joke, again? :-P

Maybe I read the wrong humor into it, but I read it as fingers are 
often called "digits", and hence the shaping of pottery using one's 
fingers makes it "digital".

Craig looked at the wheel that spins under the clay and pointed out 
that its "turntable-ness" makes it "analog" as well.
