Tho in human society, there are worse things than social deprivation.
Social ostracism and punishment can make deprivation look good in
comparison.

My ma sent me something lately, I'm sure you've heard it before. How you
put a banana in a cupboard with a bunch of chimps, and beat or punish all
the chimps when one goes for the banana, resulting in a punitive culture
where the whole troop beats anybody who goes for the banana.
Then, you start replacing the chimps, and one by one the originals are gone,
and all you have left is an ongoing social pattern. Too bad they don't
have intellect, one of them could stop the beatings with a simple question,
Why are we beating each other in our aspirations for a banana?
Something I myself wonder at times.
