Dave T. and all,
The vital point is, that when science threw out the control of social values
by religion, it did so by throwing out values altogether and we've got lots
problems on our hands because of this "pragmatic step".
Steve's well-written and lengthy essay, Arlo's and Platt's actually fruitful
dialogue (and if hell's not frozen over, Frank's weatherman reports a
definite cooling trend) and all the quality dialogue that has come about the
last week demonstrates to my mind at least, that this crucial issue is not
going away soon and we do have the keys in our hands.
I really don't see how a pluralistic society can continue without a
metaphysics of Quality.
