as having any purpose in the long run?

Welcome. I think you'll find a broad range of personal reasons and 
goals for being here, ranging from social interaction with other 
like-minded souls to those pursuing academic degrees, to those 
seeking clarification and help understanding nuances in Pirsig's writings.

I hope answering questions is good because I have quite a few!

I prefer to think of the list as an evolving dialogue rather than 
Q&A, you might not find agreement from all in answers to your 
questions, but I hope the overall dialogue will serve you well.

And feel free to jump in anytime, we are a mostly friendly bunch. :-)
