seek Truth but to gratify particular desires. Beliefs are thought of as
tools for helping us get what we want. Since truths are pursued in support
of particular human interests, before we can even talk about the truth of a
belief, we need to sort out what sorts of desire we hope this or that belief
will satisfy. This is what is often called "The Pragmatic Method."

Surely this is not referring to all beliefs?  I believe all sorts of things
that do not "gratify particular desires" but thwart them, in fact.  For
instance, I believe that my singing voice is not good enough to be a rock
star.  Because I believe this, I have never tried, even though it's
something I used to have a desire to do.  Guess I need convincing before
I'll "believe" the Pragmatic Method.
