I was not disputing that a balance was need or desirable but I would argue that it was not acheived and that in the past the balance was heavily tilted toward emotions.

I say "integrate" where you say "sublimate", "inhibit", "override", "stop" and "subordinate". See the difference? That means there is a dispute.

Most of the retreat from emotions was retreat from the negative emotions and a recognition that even positive emotions left unchecked can lead us astray. Contemporary research suggests that one of the primary functions of consciousness and reason is inhibitory. Free won't versus free will.
