The passage you quote seems to be very clear in what it says but explaining this to Bo is pointless because he has no interest in seeing anything in any way other than in terms of his SIMian interpretation. A consequence of this is that what you say will be similarly distorted because it doesn't conform to Bo's interpretation and therefore ends up mangled in the same way as almost everything that Pirsig has said.

That's exactly right. The things I say are distorted and mangled in very much the same way and it allows me to sympathize with Pirsig. I mean, who doesn't want to be understood properly? The guy ordering a burger wants his statements to be "interpreted" rightly or his lunch is gonna suck. Show me a thinker or a writer who WANTS to be misinterpreted and I show you a guy who doesn't care about wasting years of his life. I imagine that it bugs Pirsig about as much as it would bug anyone. 

You're quite right about the adherents too. They all have one thing in common; none of them have a clue. To escape the crazy maze, apparently, they need a heroic rescuer that's more swift and powerful than any of us.
