It seems stand-up comics generally have one of two styles: 

controversial/confrontational = Lewis Black, Chris Rock, Kathy Griffin, Wanda Sykes, 
Dennis Miller 
or 
low-key = Demetri Martin, Mitch Hedberg, Bill Maher, Steven Wright, Ellen DeGeneres, 
Jerry Seinfeld (I have tickets for this month). 
George Carlin was both--he could do outrageous or he could do a beautiful riff 
on language. 
In print I like Dave Barry, P. J. O'Rourke, Woody Allen & Steve Martin. 

And of course Stewart & Colbert on TV.

I always assumed he was talking to someone else & I was off the hook.
