I equate that observation. especially among first generation immigrants
to this country, with the nouveau riche.

it's the equating 'success' with how big the house and how expensive the
car is.

IMHO, American culture, and to a certain extent some parts of Europe,
showing off one's wealth is less conspicuous than other parts of the
world. In those parts, the citizens tend to be disconnected form the
political process, and show off their 'power' is flaunt their wealth.
