Yeah.  I generally don't like that kind of thing, but can't 
seem to avoid my own public outbreaks of "bullshit."  I 
think it has to do with the weird kind of medium an 
email-bounce discussion group is.  I find in private (emails, 
bars), I can be all kinds of generous, but the MD creates 
an odd kind of perceived audience: there's not just the 
people you are talking about, but possibly all kinds of people 
merely "listening."  The trouble is that this is largely 
_perceived_: who knows how many people actually read my 
post?  It might be only the person it's addressed to, thus 
actually being a private conversation.  My snarkiness is a 
performative defense mechanism.  The easy cure is to 
treat every post as a private conversation--and indeed, I 
find with some people the illusion of privacy is easy for me 
to maintain, and the best, most generous conversations.  
But I have too much psychological baggage for that to 
generally happen.  I respond unconsciously to the text in 
front of me, perceiving all sorts of stuff in it, all depending 
on its linguistic cues.

for the crossfire.
