Well, know nothing about the subject (Rorty) being discussed, but I'll take
a stab at your definition problem cuz it seems obvious to me.

External manifestation are how words are heard - how they instantiate in the
world.  Meanings has the connotation of intent of the speaker.  Those are
completely differing things, what you mean and what is understood.
 Sometimes enemies even.  But sometimes friends.

Ah dave, now that is an interesting distinction.  Is it real thought?    I
mean, since it's all the same words on a screen, what's the difference
between the messenger and the message in cyberspace?
