Marsha said to dmb:
Rorty is your rival, not mine. And even if Rorty is your rival, that is no justification for deliberately conflating epistemological relativism with absolute relativism. In fact it seems to me a perfect demonstration of making truth relative to a favored pattern and against its detractor.

dmb says:
I have no idea what you're trying to say. What is "absolute relativism" and where did I conflate it with anything? And isn't that a rather oxymoronic phrase? Did you make that up? And are you really trying to say that making a case for or against something is a way of "making truth relative"? In any case, I really can't make any sense of that particular string of words. Except for the idea that Rorty is not your rival, I just don't know what you mean.

In any case, the point was simply that my opposition does not depend on WHO is advocating relativism. Richard Rorty, Stanley Fish, Matt K or you. It's objectionable no matter who is pushing it.

The issue of relativism is one of the central areas of contention in contemporary pragmatism. Since Pirsig self-identifies as a pragmatist and we're talking about relativism, how can you fail to see the relevance of Rorty's pragmatic relativism? I've been debating Rorty fans in this forum for many years, particularly with Matt and Steve. There must be hundreds of posts, maybe a thousand. How could you have failed to notice that? I'm pretty sure you've taken sides several times, in fact. It was as a cheerleader more than a philosopher, but still.
